HOUSTON (AP) Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and challenger Dan Patrick will debate Friday night in Houston. The one-hour event will be televised, broadcast on radio and streamed online. Patrick is now considered the front-runner in this month's Republican runoff.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A Texas state lawmaker has begun a 15-day sentence in the Travis County jail. Representative Naomi Gonzalez pleaded no contest over a drunken driving accident in Austin last year. The El Paso Democrat was defeated in a March primary.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) First lady Michelle Obama has kicked off an initiative she calls "Reach Higher" at an appearance in San Antonio. She led more than 2,000 high school students in a pledge to enroll, persevere and graduate from college. She also wants businesses to make more summer job opportunities for kids in college and more foundations to offer scholarships.

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) Former President George W. Bush is holding another mountain bike ride for wounded veterans at his Crawford ranch. Sixteen current and retired members of the military wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan are participating in the 100-kilometer ride. It lasts three days.
