HOUSTON (AP) A disbarred attorney who authorities say stole $9 million from his employer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. Anthony Chiofalo bought valuable collectibles with the money he embezzled. Authorities say Chiofalo took the money while working in Houston for Tadano America Corporation.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) Health officials in a South Texas county are investigating a recent increase of an infectious disease that causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Local doctors have reported about 60 cases of shigellosis (shih-guh-LOW-sus) this year. The spike prompted the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Health Department to issue an alert yesterday.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Bell Helicopter is laying off 325 employees as the company continues to downsize because of declining defense spending. The layoffs will largely affect operations at its Fort Worth-based headquarters. These layoffs bring Bell's total staff reductions to more than 700 since early 2013.
EDINBURG, Texas (AP) Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection say three helium-filled surveillance balloons deployed last year along the Texas-Mexico border have been effective in deterring and spotting illegal activity. The blimp-shaped balloons were originally used by the Department of Defense in Iraq and Afghanistan. The agency says it plans on deploying two more balloons in June.
