HEARNE, Texas (AP) The nephew of a 93-year-old Central Texas woman shot and killed by a police officer says his aunt fired two shots before the officer shot her. Roy Jones told KBTX-TV of Bryan and College Station that he had taken his aunt Pearlie Golden to renew her driver's license, but she was denied after failing her test before threatening him with her .38-caliber handgun.
KILLEEN, Texas (AP) Two police officers in the Central Texas town of Killeen have been hospitalized after being shot while serving a search warrant at an apartment. A Killeen police spokeswoman says a man and woman inside the apartment opened fire on the officers early yesterday. Both have been taken into custody. Smith said two other officers were struck in their protective gear.
MEXICO CITY (AP) Authorities in Tamaulipas state say five gunmen and one soldier died in gunbattles in Reynosa, a city across the border from McAllen, Texas. Tamaulipas' government says a citizen's complaint led soldiers to a house where gunmen attacked them, killing one soldier. A gunman was also killed in that shootout.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) The U.S. Border Patrol in West Texas is reaching out to at-risk high school students with a mentoring program that teaches the importance of making sound life decisions. Twelve teenagers referred by truancy court graduated yesterday from the five-week REAL program in which Border Patrol agents mentor them through physical training, community service and other guidance.
