AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A political rival of Republican Dan Patrick has released hospital records indicating the Texas lieutenant governor front-runner attempted suicide while dealing with depression in the 1980s. Patrick responded last night in a statement that he was voluntarily hospitalized and that some prescribed medication he took "created more serious problems." He did not address the reported suicide attempt. The records were evidence in a 1989 lawsuit against Patrick and given to reporters by Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who finished last in a four-way primary for lieutenant governor in March.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) El Paso officials say they're poised to offer a five-year contract to a former North Texas city manager to lead the West Texas city of 673,000 residents. The El Paso city council is scheduled to formally hire 47-year-old Tommy Gonzalez on Tuesday. His salary will be $239,000 as city manager starting June 23rd.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) A North Texas jury returned a death sentence for a man convicted of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her 8-year-old son before fleeing to Oklahoma. The Tarrant County jury deliberated about seven hours before condemning Cedric Ricks for killing 30-year-old Roxann Sanchez and her son Anthony Figueroa at their Bedford apartment on May 1st, 2013.
TYLER, Texas (AP) Federal prosecutors in East Texas say a Dallas man has been indicted for smuggling dead hummingbirds into the U.S. from Mexico. A federal grand jury this week indicted 53-year-old Carlos Delgado Rodriguez.
