CHICAGO (AP) President Barack Obama has nominated San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to be the nation's new housing secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, the three-term mayor would become one of the highest-ranking Hispanic officials serving at the pleasure of the president. Castro has been mentioned as a possible Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2016.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) This is the last day for early primary runoff voting across Texas. The big Republican race is for lieutenant governor. State Senator Dan Patrick received more votes than incumbent David Dewhurst in the March primary but failed to win the nomination outright.

HOUSTON (AP) Two United Airlines jets nearly collided over Houston two weeks ago. Federal officials say the jets came within less than a mile of each other and 400 feet apart in height after taking off from Bush Intercontinental Airport. A controller gave both pilots instructions to keep the planes apart.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) A Corpus Christi man accused of killing his grandmother is fit to stand trial. A judge issued that ruling in the case of David Christy, who was charged after the dismembered remains of his 77-year-old grandmother were found buried near the home they shared.
