AUSTIN, Texas (AP) An Austin man has been arrested on federal charges accusing him of aiming a laser pointer at an Austin police helicopter. FBI agents arrested Gabriel Soza Ruedas Jr. Prosecutors say it's the first arrest in Central Texas under a 2012 federal law that bars aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. Conviction carries up to a five-year prison term and $250,000 fine.
DALLAS (AP) Three Dallas high school seniors headed for their graduation rehearsal have been seriously hurt when their car crashed. One of the victims is in critical condition. His two companions are listed in fair condition. The three are students at Dallas' Lassiter Early College High School.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Austin city officials are keeping city swimming pools open longer this summer but are having difficulty finding teenagers to work as lifeguards. Aquatic program manager Jodi Jay says it's always difficult to fill the jobs but this year is more of a challenge. The city needs up to 750 lifeguards and is holding a job fair today.
ATHENS, Texas (AP) A fertilizer fire at an Athens farm supply is contained. An evacuation ordered early last night in the town of about 13,000 remains in effect. Authorities say about a four-to five block area has been cordoned off. Mayor Jerry Don Vaught says about 300 to 350 people are affected.
