AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A Department of Veterans Affairs employee in San Antonio who reported fraudulent scheduling practices says officials tried to stop him from speaking publicly and blamed the problems on low-level scheduling clerks. The Austin American Statesman says claims by Brian Turner, who works at the North Central Federal Clinic, were part of a wave of allegations of systematic delays in veterans' care that ultimately led to Friday's resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.

KATY, Texas (AP) A 20-year-old has been arrested in the fatal shootings of his parents at their home in a gated community in Katy. The Fort Bend County sheriff's office said Ryan Walton was arrested yesterday in the Rosenberg area, about 20 miles south of Katy. He's being held without bond in the Fort Bend County Jail.

SPRINGTOWN, Texas (AP) A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for clues leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot a nursing dog and left her body in a cage by a North Texas roadside, along with her 10 puppies. The grim find was made Wednesday morning in Springtown, a Parker County town 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

HOUSTON (AP) A year has passed since a fire swept through a southwest Houston hotel, killing four firefighters. Houston Mayor Annise Parker joined Houston Fire Department personnel in marking that occasion at a Saturday morning ceremony at Houston's Fire Fighter's Pension Hall.
