FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry has bashed Washington in a speech at the Texas Republican convention in Fort Worth. The loudest cheers came when Perry called the new health care law "a failed scheme" and said the federal government shouldn't be allowed to trample states' rights. Perry isn't seeking re-election and may be preparing to run for the White House again.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The governors of a half-dozen states, including Texas, are asking President Barack Obama to issue federal vouchers to veterans allowing them to go outside Veterans Affairs to receive quicker care. They're also asking that state inspectors be allowed to review VA facilities and practices.

HOUSTON (AP) A Harris County murder trial is in the hands of a jury. Mark Castellano once taped a TV interview with Dr. Phil in which he insisted he didn't kill his girlfriend Michelle Warner in 2012. Prosecutors say Castellano choked the woman to death at their Houston apartment and dumped her body near Midland.

IRVING, Texas (AP) Retail gasoline prices are holding steady across Texas this week at $3.46 per gallon. The auto club's weekly survey finds prices range from a low of $3.36 in Amarillo to a high of $3.53 in Dallas.
