AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Austin will spend $30 million to buy about 140 homes in a neighborhood swamped by floodwaters last year. Officials want to remove residents and buildings from the area along Onion Creek that's prone to flooding. Many homes near the creek were built before government maps began outlining flood plains.

WASHINGTON (AP) A Texas Marine has been killed in combat in Afghanistan. Twenty-three year-old Thomas Spitzer of New Braunfels died Wednesday in Helmand Province. He was on his second deployment to the region.

DALLAS (AP) Police are investigating a fatal confrontation involving three officers in Dallas. Police say the officers shot and killed Rodney Hodge Thursday night after Hodge fired a gun in a residential neighborhood, ignored orders to drop the weapon and pointed it at neighbors. The three officers have been placed in leave.

DALLAS (AP) Texas Democrats are holding their state convention in Dallas. Despite internal disagreements over guns and abortion, delegates are promising a party platform that is more inclusive than the one Republicans approved. Candidate for governor Wendy Davis will address the convention Friday night.
