DALLAS (AP) Democratic U.S. Senate candidate David Alameel says his rise from poor, immigrant farmhand to millionaire means he understands "working for a living." Addressing the Texas Democratic Convention on Saturday, the Lebanon-born dental entrepreneur said his opponent, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, was a Washington powerbroker who helped wreck the U.S. economy.

DALLAS (AP) A fired Dallas police officer has been convicted of official oppression in the 2011 videotaped beating of a handcuffed suspect. Quaitemes (kwah-TAY'-mehs) Williams was convicted Friday and faces up to a year in prison over the misdemeanor count. The 29-year-old officer, who was fired following the January 2011 incident captured by a patrol car camera, will be sentenced next month by a judge.

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) A gunman who opened fire in the kitchen of a West Texas restaurant has been shot and killed by an off-duty police officer who was eating at the place. Midland police say the suspect was fatally shot Friday night. Nobody else was hurt. Police did not immediately release the suspect's name or further details about why he walked into the Mexican restaurant and opened fire.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) A South Texas man accused of breaking into a home during a drug-related robbery has been charged with capital murder after gunfire left two men dead. Bexar (bayr) County jail records show Joseph Kirschberg of Helotes (hel-OH'-tis) was being held yesterday on $500,000 bond. No attorney was listed for Kirschberg, who was arrested Thursday.
