CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) A Coast Guard crew patrolling in the Gulf of Mexico off South Padre Island has found an illegal net containing dozens of dead sharks. A Coast Guard statement says the mile-long gill net was found loaded with 65 dead sharks about 20 miles off South Padre Island. All of the sharks were badly decomposed.
HOUSTON (AP) An Oklahoma company that houses almost half of the worst sex offenders in Texas wants those inmates gone. Avalon Correctional Services says increased inmate litigation requires staff to travel from as far as El Paso to Conroe and the only state court that handles those cases. Avalon also says the state refuses to negotiate better terms for the business.
MISSION, Texas (AP) U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske (kur-lih-KOW'-skee) will highlight the dangers of illegal immigration by visiting a South Texas riverfront park. More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been detained since October after they entered the United States illegally. The Obama administration is pressing to spread the word that the children won't be allowed to stay.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The LBJ Presidential Library is marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act by tweeting the day as it happened. Experts and archivists at the Austin library are taking to Twitter to re-enact President Lyndon B. Johnson's day. The 1965 act helped end legal discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion and national origin.
