RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (AP) Police have arrested a South Texas man accused of stabbing his 11-year-old daughter 21 times. Police say the man repeatedly stabbed his daughter in the arms and legs before puncturing himself twice in the neck. Police say he will be booked into the Starr County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

HOUSTON (AP) A Houston Community College trustee has won a court challenge to his election and seating on the board of trustees. A Harris County jury found that Dave Wilson lives in the district his seat represents on the board. Harris County had contended that he didn't live in the apartment he had listed as his residence in election documents.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The powerful Senate Finance Committee that writes the Texas budget will be chaired by a woman for the first time. Republican state Senator Jane Nelson received the appointment yesterday. She has served in the Senate for two decades and takes over the budget at a time when spending is already looking to be a major issue in the Legislature next year.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) Acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson will visit El Paso's VA medical center today. He'll meet with officials and discuss how to improve veterans' access to health care. Gibson's visit comes in the wake of a scandal over falsified VA record-keeping and months-long wait times for appointments with VA doctors.
