EL PASO, Texas (AP) Acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson has met with VA medical center officials in El Paso and vowed to improve veterans' access to health care. Gibson says the facility will receive an additional $5 million to facilitate access to doctors outside the VA. He also promised that VA officials will be accountable for past and future wrongdoings.
MEADOWS PLACE, Texas (AP) A group of Southeast Texas mayors are backing a bill that would give local communities time to assess any federal request to house unaccompanied children who have illegally crossed into the U.S. Communities would get 90 days to evaluate such a request. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would still ultimately decide where to house them.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) North Texas police have filed criminal charges against one of the owners of a funeral home where eight decaying bodies were discovered earlier this week. Rachel Hardy-Johnson faces seven counts of abuse of a corpse. She and her husband own Johnson Family Mortuary in Fort Worth. No charges have been filed against the husband.
HOUSTON (AP) A Houston man sent to death row for abducting and killing a medical student who was returning a movie to a video store 14 years ago has lost a federal court appeal. Perry Williams' attorneys argued that he had deficient legal help at his trial. Williams doesn't yet have an execution date.
