EDINBURG - Hidalgo County officials approved a resolution to provide support to the University of Texas-Pan American as the University of Texas System develops a new university in the Rio Grande Valley.

The resolution supports the unification of UTPA, the University of Texas at Brownsville and the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen. The move also seeks to bring a full-fledged medical school to the region.

Once created, the new university would bring 10,000 jobs to the Valley, officials said.

The new university still needs the approval of the Texas Legislature.
