EDINBURG - A wanted man has renewed death threats against Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino.
The suspect, Roberto Medina Cantu, made the threats by telephone from Mexico where he is hiding, Trevino said.
"This guy is set on doing something," Trevino said. "But ... he has to cross the border first. The FBI, Border Patrol and DPS are very well aware of situation. They are keeping an eye out on him."
Trevino said Mexican authorities are aiding in the investigation.
"We've contacted Mexican authorities and they are looking for him," Trevino said.
This is not the first time Medina threatens Hidalgo County's top lawman or his deputies. The threats were made through calls to the county's dispatch center.
"Since the initial threat ... we've had at least three or more," Trevino said.
Investigators said the suspect goes by the nickname El Loco. Trevino said Medina is a known gang member with a lengthy criminal history.
Trevino said Medina is capable of carrying out his threats.
"Not only are we talking about the safety of our deputies, my safety, but of our families too," Trevino said.
Anyone with information on Medina's location is asked to call 911.
