MISSION - Fire investigators continue trying to determine the cause of a brush fire Thursday near Conway Avenue and Expressway 83 in Mission.
Investigators said the fire was deliberately set.
Firefighters had a difficult time extinguishing the blaze because of the accelerants used, officials said. Fire officials said nothing they used would douse the flames.
"When we got here we found large piles of brush burning and we tried to extinguish the fire. We did see different types of smoke and the fire would not extinguish, we then applied foam to it and to try and suppress the fire and that didn't work," Mission Fire Department Lt. Rene Alaniz said Thursday.
Firefighters said water and foam actually made the fire stronger.
"They soaked the pile with some kind of diesel or some type of accelerant," Alaniz said.
Firefighters had to use a backhoe to spread the fire and eventually extinguish the flames.
