MERCEDES - Hidalgo County sheriff's investigators said a Mercedes student fired a toy gun on a school bus Thursday morning.
School staff earlier said it was a pellet gun. A commander at the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office said it's actually an airsoft gun that shoots plastic pellets. It has an orange tip at the end.
The investigator told us the fifth grade boy got the toy gun from a neighbor and had it in his backpack. We learned one student was playing with it and it went off. The plastic pellets bounced off a window and hit two students.
The sheriff's investigator said none of the children were hurt. We're told investigators don't plan to file any criminal charges.
Meanwhile, Mercedes ISD Superintendent Dr. Daniel Trevino told us it's not clear why the boy was taking the toy to school. He said the district is conducting its own investigation. The bus was headed for North Elementary. Surveillance cameras recorded the incident.
