HIDALGO COUNTY - The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department ended its investigation into a shooting involving a La Villa police officer.

The findings will be forwarded to the Hidalgo County district attorney for possible prosecution.

The shooting happened on Sept. 23. The officer shot Santiago Bruno, 45, after a high-speed chase. Bruno and Alejadro Gill, 26, allegedly stole beer from a store before leading officers on the chase.

Officials said Gill was the original driver of the getaway vehicle. He fled on foot when officers stopped the vehicle. Police said Bruno jumped behind the wheel and fled. The officer shot Bruno three times after the chase ended. Investigators said Bruno was not armed.

The La Villa Police Department asked the sheriff's office to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The officer said the suspect lunged at him before he opened fire.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said his investigators could not find a justification for the shooting.
