WASHINGTON (AP) The Newseum is honoring the 77 journalists who were killed around the world in 2013.

At a dedication ceremony Monday, Associated Press Executive Editor and Senior Vice President Kathleen Carroll called on journalists to support their global colleagues. She spoke about the importance of standing up to corruption and fear.

"Across the world, journalists are not submitting. They fight for the right to freely chronicle the actions of the powerful and the humble," Carroll said. As fellow journalists, she said, "we owe them our support, our attention."

In attendance were about 50 friends and relatives of 10 journalists whose names were added to the memorial. Some reached for tissues as the circumstances behind the deaths were read.
