HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) A Texas prison inmate is headed for execution for causing the death of a corrections officer during a short-lived escape six years ago.
The prisoner, 43-year-old Jerry Martin, has ordered no additional appeals be filed on his behalf, clearing the way for his lethal injection Tuesday evening in Huntsville.
Martin already was serving a 50-year sentence for attempted capital murder when he and another inmate broke away from a work detail outside a Huntsville-area prison in September 2007. A 59-year-old prison officer on horseback, Susan Canfield, was thrown from her horse and suffered fatal head injuries when Martin rammed her with a nearby pickup truck he stole.
Both Martin and the second inmate, John Falk Jr., sped away in the truck but were recaptured within hours not far away.
