Billie Jean King believes standing up to discrimination is the best way to combat it.

She will help lead the U.S. delegation in the opening ceremonies on Feb. 7 at the Sochi Olympics in Russia, which recently passed an anti-gay law.

King told The Associated Press on Wednesday the American delegation sends the message that "American is very diverse" and "a voice for people who don't feel they can be a voice yet."

She'll be joined on the delegation by two openly gay former Olympic athletes figure skater Brian Boitano and hockey player Caitlin Cahow.

The former tennis star hopes athletes will express themselves at the games, but without "getting into trouble."

King says she'd like sexual orientation added to the list of protections in the IOC charter.
