It's the summer months and classes are out, but a room full of students is having great time.
They are part of a GEAR UP leadership class that's taking advantage of the summer months to GEAR UP for the upcoming school year.

They are having a blast, but at the same time they're also learning about team work.

These students were all chosen by their GEAR UP facilitators to represent their 7th grade GEAR UP classes.

They have come together to learn all about team work in fun ways.

This day is huge for Beatrice Alejandra Guevara.

She's a former GEAR UP student now attending UTPA.

"Today in this convention when I saw them come in, it's probably the exact face I had when I was in 7th grade. You are scared You are timid. You are shy. You really don't want to say since it's different people, but as time goes by and the activities, they are pumped up. They are really happy to meet new people."

Beatrice has plenty of advice for these up and coming youngsters headed for college some day.

"To ask questions, don't be scared of asking about applications, anything. One thing is take advantage, you have GEAR UP and this program is going to help you a lot. Take advantage of the presentations, t he workshops they give you, the trips they give, because you are going to learn a lot."

What if gear up had not existed?
"Honestly I would not be in college right now...I come from a family, they didn't have any information about, my parents didn't know how to help me. So I'm really grateful. I had the opportunity with this program because is was one in a million chance."

And what was exciting about meeting Beatrice was that she is still learning.

"It's helping me grow even now, helping me with my major, helping me try to get the word out, giving back to the community so it's just amazing."
