EDCOUCH - People in Edcouch will be getting some relief from their high water bills. The city is getting millions of dollars from the USDA to improve the water system. Leaders say in the long run that'll help with individual water bills.
City leaders made the announcement tonight. $25 million to the water and waste water systems. Alderman Eddy Gonzalez says, "Edcouch for many years has been having many problems and it appears we're heading in the right direction now."
Some of the problems the alderman is talking about are skyrocketing water bills for utility customers. We told you about the issue earlier this month.
Paul Vazaldua, a consultant for the city of Edcouch, says, "The council has a vision to try to lower utility rates for city of Edcouch and that becomes difficult when you're dealing with a dilapidated system."
Now Edcouch's dilapidated system will be fixed. Not right away, but eventually, city leaders say the improvements will make a difference for everyone. Vazaldua says, "In long run this will help with higher utility rates and will reduce cost of maintenance and operations to the city."
The process of getting the funding from the USDA should be complete by the end of this year. City officials also continue their efforts to check every water meter in the city and replace broken ones. They say that will also help lower water bills.
