NORTHERN HIDALGO COUNTY - CHANNEL 5 NEWS continues to get phone calls and emails from viewers who want to help a paralyzed man who has been living in a storage shed. Woodrow Reed lost his mobile home this past summer to foreclosure.
Reed is paralyzed from the waist down; an infection spread into his spinal chord several years ago. Currently, Reed is in a McAllen hospital recovering from a broken leg.
We first shared his story in late September. Since then, it has garnered national attention. Estela Garza from Edinburg has donated a house for Reed.
"This is my dad's house, and I just don't want it to go to waste," she explained. "I'd rather give it away to somebody who is going to actually make use of it."
Garza says she was trying to sell it.
"And I was like maybe God doesn't want me to sell it…. Maybe he wants us to give it to somebody that is in need," she told us.
Efforts are under way to get the home moved to Reed's property in rural Hidalgo County. We're told a local company has agreed to move the home for free. Before that can happen, work must be done to Reed's property.
Mike Wilson has stepped forward to coordinate finding volunteers and supplies. Here's what is needed:
- Lumber
- Nails
- Concrete
- Paint (white interior)
- Paint brushes
- Grass
- Trees
- Shrubs
