HIDALGO - Officers on patrol noticed one of the city's manhole covers was out of place near 4th and Brazil Streets. They looked inside and found more than 2-dozen bundles of marijuana. The load weighed in at just over 1,000lbs.

Officers sealed off several streets around the manhole, then went in to get the drugs.

Firefighters had to be called out to supply oxygen. Eventually, they were able to get out the pot.

Police believe the drugs were smuggled in through a network of underground drains.

It's a problem in several Valley cities. Hidalgo's Police Chief, Vernon Rosser worries the smuggling may extend beyond drugs and people.

"If they can take big packages of narcotics plus a person. They might also bring explosives, contaminant materials. There could be a lot of things," Rosser said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS is working on an investigation into the drainage tunnels.

Monday at 10, we'll take you inside and let you see what we found under the streets of Hidalgo.
