EDINBURG - Edinburg CISD is talking about security on their campuses, after a carjacking at a school yesterday.
School officials say when a carjacking happened at Lincoln Elementary, officers arrived within minutes. But the carjacking victim wants to know why an officer wasn't already on campus, patrolling the school.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS took his questions to the district.
Gilbert Tagle, a spokesperson for the district, says the economy forced administrators to cut back on security officers
.
"Edinburg is trying, but just like every other district, budget constraints sometimes will create a situation for us,” he says.
We found out the district has been cutting back on security officers. Tagle says when school security officers quit their jobs, they're not replaced.
Lincoln Elementary has been left without its own security officer this year.
We’re told the school district tries to place at least one officer at every two schools. They're hoping if the economy turns around they'll be able to hire more security.
"We hope nothing like this will ever occur again,” says Tagle.
Meanwhile, police have no new leads on the carjackers. But they've put out an alert in the U.S. and in Mexico, so that officers will keep an eye out for the stolen van.
