EDINBURG - The fate of a man who confessed to murder will have to wait another day.

Jose Luis Cantu admitted to the 2006 murder of his girlfriend Nelly Casas. Testimony for the sentencing phase of his trial ended today.

Prosecutors played an audio clip of Cantu talking to Casas.  They said they wanted to give jurors a look inside the couple's violent relationship.

Meanwhile, the defense had Cantu's brother, sister, and mother take the stand.  The three asked for mercy and a second chance for Cantu.

They claim the murder was a mistake done in a moment of passion.

The jury did not hear from Cantu.  He made the last-minute decision not to take the stand.

Both sides have rested their case.  The jury will start deliberating Cantu's punishment tomorrow.
