AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A 43-year-old man who had a year-long sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl he met online has been sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole under a relatively new law that targets people who transport young victims for sex.
A jury in Hays County in suburban Austin this week sentenced Robert Ritz under provisions of a 2011 law that allows the sentence for a person convicted of continuous trafficking of someone under 17 or continuous sexual abuse of someone under 14.
Ritz's attorney tells the Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/1nRjGnn ) the sentence is too harsh. The law's author, Democrat state Rep. Senfronia Thompson of Houston, says the measure was intended to combat prostitution and is being misapplied.
Hays County prosecutors say Ritz was driving the victim to locations for sex.
