LA JOYA - Charges could soon be upgraded to murder for a man arrested after a botched theft attempt in Hidalgo County.

One of the three suspects could face murder after one of his accomplices died. The Hidalgo County sheriff says three men were getting ready to steal natural gas condensate in La Joya. At one point, a spark ignited causing the explosion. One of the men died.

Vidal Ochoa has already been charged with theft and his other accused accomplice made it to a Reynosa hospital and is recovering from serious burns.

Investigators seized several tanks that belonged to the men. They believe the trio used them to successfully steal the condensate at least a dozen times. The substance is present in raw natural gas and has several uses.

The identity of the man killed in the explosion has not been released.
