McALLEN - A judge today sentenced Jeffrey Ostfield of Las Vegas to six years in prison for importing a controlled substance. He was charged in 2009 with importing tranquilizers from Mexico.
Court records show he intended to give the tranquilizers to people who wanted to commit suicide.
He was arrested at the Progreso port of entry. Prosecutors said Ostfield imported from Mexico 1,200 milliliters of pentobarbital, a controlled substance in the United States.
District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa said the guidelines for voluntary manslaughter were more fitting in the case.
