MATAMOROS - The United States consulate in Matamoros issued a statement saying that a Marine imprisoned in that border town is safe.
Lance Cpl. Jon Hammar was arrested after he crossed into Mexico with a shotgun in his vehicle. His family said the Marine thought the gun was allowed in Mexico.
"It's just silly ... life in jeopardy," Hammar's father, Jon Hammar, said.
"It's just hard as an American to think this is the reality," his mother, Olivia Hammar, said.
The Hammar family lives in Florida.
The effort to bring Hammar home is building. A petition drive collected more than 4,000 signatures Monday alone. The petition is registered with the White House.
"The consulate is following Mr. Hammar's case closely as it proceeds through the Mexican judicial system. We will continue to monitor Mr. Hammar's safety and well being throughout his detention," the consulate's media release stated.
There is no date for his trial.
