Fire crews continue to monitor a massive brush fire that started Wednesday in Encino.

Ninety percent of the fire has been contained as of Thursday afternoon, according to Heather Gonzalez.

The Falfurrias Fire Department and Southern Brooks Volunteer Fire Department are monitoring the fire until Thursday evening due to elevated fire weather conditions, Gonzalez said.

Nearly two dozen fire departments responded to the massive brush fire that burned through nearly 2,000 acres of land in Encino.

The strong winds made it difficult for crews to put out the fire, officials said Wednesday.

Falfurrias Fire Chief Ruben Ramirez said Wednesday 40 homes and livestock were threatened.

Authorities say the cause of the fire was determined to be roadside ignition.

Officials say they hope people are more cautious of any activities that may cause a spark.
