CAMERON COUNTY - More than 150 officials from federal, state, county and local agencies worked together to raid five illegal 8-liner businesses.

Operation Bishop, led by Homeland Security, focuses on more than 200 illegal 8-liners in Cameron County. The operation included 18 months of investigation. Operation Bishop will continue through December until all illegal 8-liner establishments in Cameron County are shut down.

So far, the operation has resulted in:

  • Five businesses raided
  • Eight people arrested
  • 456 machines seized
  • More than $56,000 confiscated.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio is concerned with the staggering amount of businesses in the area. Lucio said, "When you have the kind of money that's being generated by 8-liners, you're going to have the cartel coming out here. They're going to take possession of this. They would like to have this kind of money."

Homeland Security said the illegal operations bring in more than $300,000,000 from customers every year.
