Omar Silva looks a little older than most of his fellow 8th graders at Port Isabel Jr. High. Omar just happens to be a little taller and he's glad because he has a passion for sports. And that's what's driving him to attend college in Oregon, home of the Oregon Ducks.

His GEAR UP mentors help him learn all about his favorite college.

"This is a college I like. I want to go to it. She taught me what it's about, what activities it offers, she taught me what color are they, if they have football activities. I like football and that's what I want to do when I go to college."

Omar knows that attaining that goal will take a lot of work.
He's happy to have GEAR UP mentors who are teaching him the basics, including the importance of reading.

"I like to read and Joclyn helps me with reading, like she tells me the words I don't know. She tells me what it means. She tells me what books are good, what books are not, showing me how to do stuff like that."

Omar says his goal has always been to attend college someday but he says GEAR UP is making a whole lot easier, thanks to the many programs and activities that it offers.

"GEAR UP helps us a lot with many things, like what colleges we like, what colleges we want to go to, what is it about, many things."
