MERCEDES - Police are investigating the death of a man found near a canal bank early this morning. The unidentified man was found sitting in a chair along the canal bank near the Expressway and FM 491.

Police put up a tarp to shield their investigation from the public driving by on the roadway.

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Gilberto Saenz tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the young man died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Saenz says the investigation at this point will focus on whether this was a murder or a suicide.
