WESLACO - Mexican drug cartels are spreading their reach deep into the United States, the Associated Press reported Monday.
The report states that cartels are actively setting up operations in the United States.
"They've been here for some time," Stratfor Cartel Analyst Scott Steward said. Stratfor is a geopolitical intelligence firm based in Austin.
"The cartels are modifying a little bit the way they operate within the U.S.," Steward said.
He said the cartels now are involved in the distribution of drugs in cities throughout the country. He said it is a way for cartels to rip higher profits.
The Associated Press also said the cartels are cutting out the middlemen. They are relying less on street gangs to sell their products.
