CIUDAD MIER, MEXICO - A spokesperson for the Mexican government says President Felipe Calderon is in Monterrey right now, and his next stop will be Ciudad Mier, which is just across the river from Starr County.
Calderon will be there for the commissioning of a newly built military base in Ciudad Mier. The barracks will house about 600 troops deployed there in October. This will be the first time Calderon visits Mier since the military evacuated all its residents a year ago.
Zetas forced thousands into shelters in neighboring cities, threatening to kill anyone who stayed behind. Mexican officials hope Calderon's visit will help restore a sense of peace in the streets of Mier.
