EL PASO, Texas (AP) The second trial of West Texas woman accused of fatally beating her 3-year-old daughter in November 2007 has begun city after a judge declared a mistrial last summer.
The first trial of 30-year-old Yara Belen Perez was stopped last June. The El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/W2ZJdG) reports a juror told state District Judge Angie Juarez Barill of hearing two courthouse security officers discussing a newspaper article about the case. The juror also told other jurors about the bailiffs' conversation.
Perez is charged with murder in the death of Jacqueline Gonzalez, who was found in a car trunk outside an apartment Perez shared with her boyfriend. The boyfriend was convicted in 2010 and sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing. Perez faces the same sentence if convicted.
