DALLAS (AP) Missing the NCAA tournament is a tough lesson for much-improved SMU.

Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown told his players that the Mustangs have only themselves to blame for being left out of the 68-team NCAA field. The three straight losses making up their only losing streak this season came at the most inopportune time.

But the Mustangs (23-9), with only two seniors, still have games to play. They are a No. 1 seed in the NIT tournament, meaning as many as three more home games this season. They play UC Irvine on Wednesday night.

Brown says his team didn't handle adversity down the stretch and didn't learn from it. But he believes the Mustangs will be better for what they've experienced this season.
