National GEAR UP week was recently celebrated at a local middle school. Valley students helped kick off the celebration at Kennedy Middle School in Pharr.

Region One GEAR UP Executive Director Tina Atkins says singing only adds to the excitement of GEAR UP!

"Look at the kids that are here today and part of that, that we want to celebrate, is GEAR UP because we don't want to lose the vision as a nation. We have not lost our vision about better lives for everyone about college for everyone."

Tina talks about the nuts and bolts of GEAR UP.
"GEAR UP contributes by providing things like training to your teachers in the English, math, science, social studies, language arts and it contributes by provides sources for summer camps."

And she adds hard work is what it takes to reach that college ready goal.

"it takes hard work on the part of your teachers. It takes hard work on the part of our partners. It takes hard work on the part of the community, and most of all, it takes hard work on the part of the students"

These kids know what it takes and they know that hard work will help them attain that goal to make their dreams of success come true.
