WESLACO - National Guard troops from Virginia are on their way to Texas to patrol the border.
The troops' job will be to curb illegal immigration, officials said. The approximately 15 soldiers will use helicopters to patrol the region.
We are working to determine their full lists of duties.
Officials said the troops will fly a four-person crew on a rotation basis. They will support Customs and Border Protection patrols from the air.
The Virginia troops were in the Valley in 2012. They conducted surveillance duties during that deployment. They helped agents arrest 1,800 illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. They also helped seize more than 1,500 pounds of drugs.
