WESLACO - Three cities have joined forces to provide public transportation from Brownsville to South Padre Island and McAllen.
Texas Department of Transportation officials on Wednesday unveiled the new Metro Connect service.
TxDOT officials said the service will benefit students and young professionals, among others.
"We are also looking for the professionals, those individuals that are living in McAllen and working in Brownsville. Gas prices have gotten really steep, so we are looking to give those individuals just different options," Transit Director Elizabeth Suarez said.
The $1.8-million project is expected to start service in September. The hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.
