WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama says if there's no agreement to avert the "fiscal cliff," he expects both houses of Congress to vote on his proposal. It calls for blocking tax increases on all but the wealthy and simultaneously preserves expiring unemployment benefits. Senate leaders are attempting to hammer out a compromise.
NEW YORK (AP) A New York woman could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of a hate crime murder for allegedly shoving a man to his death from a subway platform on Thursday. Prosecutors say Erika Menendez said she did it because she has hated Hindus and Muslims since 9/11. The victim, who ran a print shop in Queens, was from India.
NEW DELHI (AP) The body of an Indian woman raped and brutally beaten two weeks ago in New Delhi has been cremated. Six men have been charged with her murder in a case that has shocked the country. Thousands have demonstrated for greater protection of women and a change in attitude by police and prosecutors.
ATLANTA (AP) Police say two young boys from Georgia who were reported missing this week have been located in Texas and their father is in custody and facing charges. The boys, ages 7 and 9, were visiting with their father and were supposed to return home Wednesday. An Amber Alert was issued Thursday. They were recovered in Austin, Texas.
HOUSTON (AP) The nation's oldest living president is showing signs of improvement. George H.W. Bush has been moved from an intensive care unit to a regular room at a Houston hospital. A spokesman says doctors say his condition has improved. He was moved to the ICU after developing a fever. Bush was admitted Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough.
