WESLACO - State health officials on Wednesday said the flu has become widespread in the Rio Grande Valley.
State health officials said 12 percent of all doctor visits were of patients with flu-like symptoms. The state could not provide specific numbers because officials said the flu is very common.
Hospital officials in the Valley reported more flu patients visiting emergency rooms. Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco treated 90 patients in December for flu-like symptoms. Nine days into January, they've treated 47 patients with the symptoms.
Doctors recommend that patients not go to the emergency room unless they need to be hospitalized. They recommend visiting a clinic or a primary care physician.
