BROWNSVILLE - An offshore oil rig will leave the Port of Brownsville in a few days.

The Ocean Onyx will be towed to Louisiana. The rig is designed to operate in depths of more than 6,000 feet. It has housing quarters for 140 people.

It took 1,000 workers two years to upgrade the rig.

"It's pretty much the same we've done with others in our fleet. We have another one in Singapore getting the same upgrades that we've done here," project manager David Wedgeworth said.

The upgrades were done at AmFELS at a cost of $300 million. Diamond Offshore Drilling owns the rig.

The rig is scheduled to leave the port Wednesday.
