MISSION - It was a difficult night for the Valley's three state-ranked girls basketball teams competing in Friday's area round. Only one of them, Harlingen, was able to move on and join Nikki Rowe as the last girls standing in the UIL basketball playoffs. Los Fresnos, ranked in the 5A poll, and 15th ranked 4A team Hidalgo both played away from home and lost in the second round. In Alice, the Lady Pirates managed only 12 points in the first half and lost to Gregory-Portland 55-34. Los Fresnos faced Del RIo in Laredo. The 5A Falcons lost by five to Del Rio 55-50. Yet, the Harlingen Cardinals were able to advance by defeating Sharyland on the road 51-45. The Cardinals will meet Alexander in the third round after the Lady Bulldogs stopped Weslaco 46-41. The other surviving Valley team was Nikki Rowe. The Lady Warriors will face Del RIo after a tight 55-51 victory at home over PSJA North. The lone remaining 3A squads were also eliminated on Friday. 32-3A champ La Feria was stopped by West Columbia 74-54. Goliad defeated Rio Hondo 47-28.
