The 2014 outdoor motocross season kicks off this weekend in Southern California and it should be a wide-open race.
Ryan Villopoto will not be back to defend his title, shelved by knee surgery after wrapping up his fourth straight Supercross title.
That opens the door for any number of riders to claim the title.
The favorites will be former champions Ryan Dungey, James Stewart and Chad Reed, who was second in the Supercross standings before a shoulder injury ended his season.
But they should get plenty of competition from Ken Roczen, Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac and Trey Canard, young riders who have shown they can keep up with the veterans, at least in short runs.
The 12-race season begins Saturday in San Bernardino, California.
