WESLACO - Gov. Rick Perry on Monday visited the Rio Grande Valley to tour a detention center for unaccompanied young illegal immigrants. He also met with Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw to discuss steps to secure the region.
McCraw informed Perry about a surge in DPS patrols in the Valley. Last week, Perry approved a $1.3-million-a-week border security program for the region. The increased patrols are expected to last through the end of the year.
Perry said the surge in DPS presence in the Valley is in response to the spike in illegal crossings in the region.
A DPS spokesman said troopers will go after drug cartel operators in the region. The troopers do not have authority to enforce immigration laws.
