COLLEGE STATION - Valley entries won five out of six pool games on the opening day of the state 7-on-7 football tournament. And as a result, both Port Isabel and La Villa will advance to play in Friday's championship bracket of the Division 2 tournament. Port Isabel opened pool play with a 27-19 decision over Springtown and followed that with a 21-19 win over Beckville. The Tarpons' final game of the day was a battle of pool unbeatens. In the game against Lorena, Port Isabel prevailed to 27-13 to complete the opening day with a perfect 3-and-0 record. La Villa, a quarter-finalist in last year's Division 2 tournament, got off to a slow start by losing the Thursday opener to Navasota 47-6. A solid win over Boyd 48-21 put the Cardinals in great shape to advance to the championship round. A 33-8 victory over winless Comanche sealed the deal and returned La Villa to the winner's bracket on Friday. Three other Valley entries open play in the Division 1 tournament on Friday afternoon. Edcouch-Elsa, Harlingen and Weslaco are all scheduled in Friday pool play.
