McALLEN - Officials have identified the pilot of a small airplane that crash-landed Tuesday morning at McAllen-Miller International Airport.
McAllen city officials said Remey Russell of Rancho Viejo was behind the controls of the single-engine aircraft when it slammed into the ground short of the runway. The pilot walked away from the crash, officials said.
McAllen-Miller International Airport Director of Aviation Phillip Brown said the plane took off from the airport and immediately had engine problems. He said the pilot tried circling back but was unable to reach the runway.
The crash affected air traffic for several hours. One flight scheduled to land at the airport was diverted to Corpus Christi. Another flight was delayed until crews cleared the crash scene.
